(October 2008) - Many of us have experienced personality changes in our loved one going through the various stages of their particular neurological disease. Sometimes the anti-psychotic drugs or anti-anxiety/depression drugs provided them may have worked, sometimes not. I think it is helpful to know which ones to try and then see how it works with your loved one. Everyone reacts to medications uniquely -- often differently.
I want to encourage those of you watching these difficult personality changes in your loved one to remember that this is NOT your loved one. It is either the disease or the medications. Sometimes the anger is directed to us, and it can hurt terribly. But many times our loved one cannot help it, and they do not really mean to be hurtful to us. So I encourage you during these emotionally difficult times, to think about some close and happy times you've had with your loved one, before the disease took over. Hold on tight to the person that your loved one really is.
