As speech worsens its harder and harder to tell what the patient needs or wants.
One person's answer was to put words and pictures on pieces of cardboard and seal them in plastic. The words were written in large letters, so the patient could read and select the one needed. The pictures were of things the patient would need everyday. Only one word or one picture was glued to a piece of cardboard. This was done to prevent confusion over which word or picture he was pointing to.
Some examples: Pictures could be of the members of the family, favorite things to eat, glass of water etc. Words might include yes, no, thank you, please, hot, cold etc.
After the pictures and words were glued to the cardboard and sealed in plastic, holes were punched in the sheets and they were placed in a hard cover washable looseleaf binder.
Using a looseleaf notebook meant that additional words or pictures could be easily added.
The completed book needs to stay simple and with as few pages as possible. Turning a page and looking for the right word can cause agitation, anxiety and frustration.
If possible have the patient help you in choosing the pictures and word to be included.
